The 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Law Institute (ALI) took place this May, bringing together leading experts from the academy, law practice, and the judiciary. Rhode Center Co-Director and Stanford Law School Professor David Freeman Engstrom led a panel on high-volume civil adjudication featuring Hon. Carolyn B. Kuhl (Los Angeles Superior Court), Hon. Nathan L. Hecht (Ret., Supreme Court of Texas), and Erika Rickard (The Pew Charitable Trusts). The discussion centers on the unique challenges presented by high-stakes, small-scale civil cases—disputes involving debt collection or eviction, for example, that affect large numbers of people but often lack visibility and resources. The panel presents the work of the ALI High-Volume Civil Adjudication Project, on which Engstrom serves as the Reporter.
An overview of the meeting, including a Member Spotlight on Engstrom, is available in the Spring 2025 edition of the ALI Reporter.
